Greek listening practice

In this video you will have the chance to test your listening skills. You will listen to two short recordings and then you will answer to the questions. You will listen to each one twice, first in natural speed and then in slow speed. While you are listening, you can read in your screen the unknown words and phrases. There are Greek, English and Turkish subtitles, but I recommend you first to try without subtitles and then you can turn on subtitles to check if you have understood everything. So, let’s get started.

 

My name is Dimitra and I am 38 years old. I was born and grew up in Thessaloniki, but I have been living in Athens for 5 years. Although I am a lawyer, I work in a clothing store as a saleswoman. I don’t like my job very much, because I work many hours every day and I often have  to face very demanding clients. When I finish work and before I go back home, I go to the nursery to pick up my children. I have three kids. Two boys and a girl. My youngest child, Ariadni, is only ten months old. We baptized her last month.  My husband, Petros, who is a philologist, chose her ancient Greek name.

Hello. My name is Nick and the last ten years I have been working in an advertising company. I love my work and I usually enjoy it, although sometimes it makes me very anxious. Like today, for example, that everything went wrong. I had to be at office at 8.30, because at 9.00 I had a very important meeting. I left home very early to be sure that I will arrive on time. My car was in the garage and I could not find a taxi. To not waste more time I took the way to the bus stop. Twenty minutes later and because in the meanwhile no bus had passed, I was informed that the bus drivers were on strike. Finally, I went back home, I got my bike and I went to my work. When I arrived at the office, it was already 10.30. I went to my manager (to his office) to apologize and to explain to him what happened. I thought he would fire me, but he smiled and he told me that the meeting had been postponed. He called me, he says, but my phone was turned off.

Ονομάζομαι Δήμητρα και είμαι 38 ετών. Γεννήθηκα και μεγάλωσα στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όμως εδώ και πέντε χρόνια ζω στην Αθήνα. Αν και είμαι δικηγόρος, εργάζομαι σε ένα κατάστημα ρούχων σαν  πωλήτρια. Δε μου αρέσει πολύ η δουλειά μου, επειδή δουλεύω πολλές ώρες καθημερινά και συχνά έχω να αντιμετωπίσω πολύ απαιτητικές πελάτισσες. Όταν τελειώνω απ’ τη δουλειά μου και πριν γυρίσω στο σπίτι, περνάω απ’ τον παιδικό σταθμό και παίρνω τα παιδιά μου. Έχω τρία παιδιά, δύο αγόρια και ένα κορίτσι. Το μικρότερο παιδί μου, η Αριάδνη, είναι μόλις δέκα μηνών. Τη βαφτίσαμε τον προηγούμενο μήνα. Το αρχαιοελληνικό όνομά της επέλεξε ο άντρας μου, ο Πέτρος, που είναι φιλόλογος.

Γεια χαρά! Με λένε Γιάννη και τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια εργάζομαι σε μία διαφημιστική εταιρεία. Αγαπώ τη δουλειά μου και συνήθως την απολαμβάνω, παρότι μερικές φορές μου δημιουργεί τρομερό άγχος. Όπως σήμερα, για παράδειγμα, που όλα πήγαν στραβά. Έπρεπε να είμαι στο γραφείο στις 8.30, γιατί στις 9.00 είχα μια πολύ σημαντική συνάντηση. Έφυγα από το σπίτι πολύ νωρίς για να είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα φτάσω στην ώρα μου. Το αυτοκίνητό μου ήταν στο συνεργείο και ταξί δεν κατάφερα να βρω. Για να μη χάσω περισσότερο χρόνο, κατευθύνθηκα προς τη στάση των λεωφορείων. Είκοσι λεπτά αργότερα και αφού στο μεταξύ δεν είχε περάσει κανένα λεωφορείο, έμαθα ότι οι οδηγοί είχαν απεργία. Τελικά γύρισα στο σπίτι, πήρα το ποδήλατό μου και πήγα στη δουλειά. Όταν έφτασα στο γραφείο, ήταν ήδη 10.30. Πήγα στον διευθυντή μου για να απολογηθώ και να του εξηγήσω τι συνέβη. Νόμιζα ότι θα με απολύσει, όμως εκείνος χαμογέλασε και μου είπε ότι η συνάντηση είχε αναβληθεί. Μου τηλεφώνησε, λέει, όμως το τηλέφωνό μου ήταν κλειστό.
