Nouns:

            Masculine nouns ending in –ος.

            1^st group: in this group there are masculine nouns ending in –ός, which

            in Nominative Singular have accent mark in the last syllable and they

 maintain it in all cases in  Singular and in Plural.

            All the nouns belonging to this group decline the same way.

                        Ενικός αριθμός                       Πληθυντικός αριθμός

            Ονομαστική: ο γιατρός (doctor)        οι γιατροί       

            Γενική:         του γιατρού                    των γιατρών

            Αιτιατική:    τον γιατρό                       τους γιατρούς

            Κλητική:        -  γιατρέ                           - γιατροί

Some nouns belonging to this group:

o σταθμός: station, depot

o βαθμός: degree, mark

o Θεός: God

o λαός: people, populace, masses

o σεισμός: earthquake

o αδελφός/ αδερφός: brother

o καιρός: weather, time

o οδηγός: guide, driver

2^nd group: in this group there are masculine nouns ending in –ος, which have

            in Nominative Singular accent mark in the second from the end syllable, and

they maintain it in all cases in Singular and in Plural

            Γενική:         του ταχυδρόμου                        των ταχυδρόμων

            Κλητική:      -    ταχυδρόμε                  -   ταχυδρόμοι

            Some nouns belonging to this group:

            o τροχονόμος: traffic policeman

            o δρόμος: road, street, way

            o γάμος: wedding, marriage

            o δράκος: ogre

            o φόβος: fear, fright, dread

            o κόσμος: universe, world, people

            o ύπνος: sleep, slumber

            o ήλιος: sun

            o νόμος: law

            o γάτος: tomcat

            o τόπος: space, place

            o χώρος: space, area

            o χρόνος: time, year, tense, period

            Third group: 1. in this group there are masculine nouns ending in –ος, which

            in Nominative Singular have accent mark in the third from the end syllable

            and they maintain it in all cases in  Singular and in Plural.

            Ονομαστική: ο ανήφορος (acclivity)              οι ανήφοροι                           

            Γενική:        του ανήφορου                            των ανήφορων

            Αιτιατική:   τον ανήφορο                               τους ανήφορους

            Κλητική:       -  ανήφορε                                   -   ανήφοροι

            Some nouns belonging to this group:

            o πονόδοντος: toothache

            o ανεμόμυλος: windmill

            o αυτοκινητόδρομος: autobahn

            2. Ιn the third group there are also masculine nouns which in Nominative

            Singular have accent mark in the third from the end syllable while

            in other cases (Genitive Singular, Genitive and Accusative Plural)

 the accent mark goes to the second from the end syllable.

            Ονομαστική: o άνθρωπος (human being)      οι άνθρωποι

            Γενική:        του ανθρώπου                            των ανθρώπων

            Αιτιατική:   τον άνθρωπο                               τους ανθρώπους

Κλητική:       -   άνθρωπε                                 -   άνθρωποι

            Some nouns belonging to this group:

            o άνεμος: wind

            o όροφος: floor, storey

            o θόρυβος: noise

            o δήμαρχος: mayor

            o κάτοικος: inhabitant, resident

            The masculine nouns ending in –ος/ός, have in Vocative Singular –ε (epsilon).

            but some of them have in Vocative Singular –o (omikron) instead of –ε.

            Let’s see the rules:

1.      The masculine proper names and surnames which are stressed in the

second from the end syllable, in Vocative Singular have –ο instead of

-ε.

Ονομαστική: ο Πέτρος, ο Γιώργος, ο Χρήστος

Κλητική: Πέτρο, Γιώργο, Χρήστο

2.      Τhe masculine diminutive ending in –άκος, have in Vocative Singular

–ο instead of -ε.

ο φίλος (male-friend)

Ονομαστική: ο φιλαράκος

Κλητική:        φιλαράκο

Συμπληρώνω τα κενά με τα ουσιαστικά στην κατάλληλη πτώση (I fill the

gaps with the nouns in the appropriate case).

1.      To όνομα του                     (ο αδελφός) μου είναι Γιώργος (My brother’s

name is George).

2.      Ποιος είναι ο αγαπημένος σου                             (ο τραγουδιστής); (Who

is your favorite singer?)

3.      Αγαπώ τους                      (ο μαθητής) μου. (I love my students).

4.      Αυτό είναι το γραφείο του                        (ο διευθυντής) μου (This is my

director’s/ head master’s office).

5.                        (o Γιώργος), τι κάνεις; (George, how are you?)

6.                        (o Γιάννης), πού είναι ο πατέρας σου; (John, where is your

Father?)

7.                        (o Πάτροκλος), μπορείς να μου δώσεις το βιβλίο σου;

(Patroclos, can you give me your book?)

8.      Στις 16 του                        (ο μήνας) έρχεται η Μαρία. (At the 16^th

of month Maria is coming).

9.      Ο σκύλος των                   (ο γείτονας) μου είναι μαύρος. (My neighbors’

dog is black).

10.  Μητρική γλώσσα των                   (ο Έλληνας) είναι τα Ελληνικά (Greek is the Greeks mother tongue).
