Banking Vocabulary in Greek

Today  I am going to teach you  the vocabulary you should know if you want to go to a  bank in Greece. We will learn all these phrases you need to deposit or withdraw money, to open a bank account, to get a loan. You will listen to some dialogues to see how we use this vocabulary and also at the end of the video there is mini quiz.

η τράπεζα: bank

ο λογαριασμός: account

ο τραπεζικός λογαριασμός: the bank account

ο τραπεζικός υπάλληλος: the bank employee

Ανοίγω έναν τραπεζικό λογαριασμό: I οpen a bank account

ο πελάτης: customer (for a man)

η πελάτισσα: customer (for a woman)

 

Πελάτης: Καλημέρα/good morning.

Υπάλληλος: Γεια σας. Πώς θα μπορούσα να σας εξυπηρετήσω;/how could i serve you? If you are a beginner, maybe you find strange the tense of the verb μπορώ/I can. To be polite instead of Present tense, we can use θα + Past continuous (θα μπορούσα).

Πελάτης: Θα ήθελα να ανοίξω έναν τραπεζικό λογαριασμό./I would like to open a bank account. We can see that we use again θα + past continuous (θα ήθελα/I would like) instead of Present tense (θέλω/I want).

Υπάλληλος: Έχετε μαζί σας τα απαραίτητα δικαιολογητικά;/ do you have with you the necessary documents?

Τα δικαιολογητικά: is a general word we use about the documents we need to do anything in a state agency.

Πελάτης: Έτσι νομίζω. Θα μπορούσατε να μου πείτε τι ακριβώς χρειάζομαι;/I think so. Could you tell me what exactly do I need?

Υπάλληλος: Φυσικά. Θα χρειαστείτε την αστυνομική σας ταυτότητα ή το διαβατήριό σας/of course. You will need your identity card or your passport, το τελευταίο εκκαθαριστικό/the last salary statement και έναν πρόσφατο λογαριασμό στο όνομά σας/and a recent bill in your name.

ο λογαριασμός: a masculine noun which means “the account” or “the bill”.

Εάν πρόκειται για λογαριασμό μισθοδοσίας.

 ο λογαριασμός μισθοδοσίας is the bank account through which we receive our salary.  

So if it is about a salary account you should bring a certificate from the employer or the most recent salary receipt, and also a certificate/a document that confirms your work’s address.

Πελάτης: Δε θέλω λογαριασμό μισθοδοσίας. Έναν απλό αποταμιευτικό λογαριασμό. A simple saving account. Δεν έχω όμως μαζί μου το εκκαθαριστικό. Γίνεται να έρθω αύριο;/is it possible to come tomorrow?

Υπάλληλος: Βέβαια. Μπορείτε να έρθετε όποτε θέλετε/of course you can come whenever you want.

Πελάτης: Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ/thanks a lot.

 

Let’s continue with the vocabulary.

καταθέτω χρήματα: I deposit money

βάζω χρήματα/λεφτά: I put money in

κάνω ανάληψη:I make a withdrawal

βγάζω χρήματα: I take out money. Βγάζω χρήματα also means “I earn money”.

We can use both of them when we talk to the teller.

Θα ήθελα να κάνω μία ανάληψη/I would like to make a withdrawal

Θα ήθελα να βγάλω χρήματα or θα ήθελα να βγάλω and the amount.

Θα ήθελα να βγάλω 300 ευρώ.

The first way is more formal.

Also we use the phrase τραβάω χρήματα/I pull money when we withdraw money from the ATM.

 

Υπάλληλος: Γεια σας/hello

Πελάτισσα: Καλημέρα. Θα ήθελα να κάνω μία ανάληψη, παρακαλώ. 200 ευρώ./ good morning. I would like to make a withdrawal, please. 200 euro.

Υπάλληλος: Δώστε μου, σας παρακαλώ, το βιβλιάριο καταθέσεων και την ταυτότητά σας./ give me please your passbook (your deposit booklet) and your identity card.

Πελάτισσα: Ορίστε.

Υπάλληλος: Υπογράψτε εδώ, παρακαλώ./sign here please.

Πελάτισσα: Μάλιστα./  Of course/sure

Υπάλληλος: Eίστε έτοιμη./ You are ready.

Πελάτισσα: Eυχαριστώ/ Thanks

 

Let’s go now to the loans.

δανείζω: to lend

δανείζομαι: to borrow

το δάνειο: the loan

παίρνω δάνειο: I get a loan

το στεγαστικό δάνειο/the loan we take to built or buy a house

το καταναλωτικό δάνειο: consumer loan

το φοιτητικό δάνειο/student loan. It is the loan the students of university can take to cover their tuition fees and living costs.

το επιτόκιο/the interest rate

It can be χαμηλό/low or υψηλό/high

η δόση and in plural οι δόσεις/installment

 

Πελάτης: Καλημέρα σας./ good morning to you.  Μπορώ να σας απασχολήσω για λίγο;/it means “can i keep you busy for a while”?, we mean “can i bother you for a while?”

Yπάλληλος: Φυσικά. Καθίστε, παρακαλώ. /of course. Sit please.

Πελάτης: Πρόκειται να αγοράσουμε ένα σπίτι και ενδιαφερόμαστε για ένα στεγαστικό δάνειο. Μπορείτε να μας ενημερώσετε σχετικά;/we are going to buy a house and we are interested in a home loan. Can you inform us about it?

Υπάλληλος: Ευχαρίστως. Για τι ποσό συζητάμε;/with pleasure/ What amount we are talking about?

Πελάτης: 100000 ευρώ.

Υπάλληλος: Αυτή τη στιγμή η τράπεζά μας χορηγεί στεγαστικά δάνεια με σταθερό επιτόκιο 8% και εξόφληση σε όσες μηνιαίες δόσεις επιθυμείτε./ Αt the moment our bank provides home loans at a fixed interest rate 8% and repayment in as many monthly installment as you wish.

Πελάτης: Ποιες προϋποθέσεις πρέπει να πληρούμε;/ what conditions we should meet/fulfill?

Υπάλληλος: Να έχετε σταθερό εισόδημα και έναν εγγυητή./ Τo have a stable income and a guarantor.

Θα ήθελα να κάνω συνάλλαγμα/I would like to change money

Το ΑΤΜ είναι εκτός λειτουργίας/the ATM is out of order.

Θα ήθελα να μάθω το υπόλοιπο του λογαριασμού μου/I would like to learn my account balance.

Θα ήθελα να μεταφέρω χρήματα/I would like to transfer money.

Πόσο κοστίζει αυτή η συναλλαγή;/What is the fee for this transaction?
