Part 2

Το δάχτυλο the finger and in plural τα δάχτυλα.

Παίζω κάτι στα δάχτυλα. / I play something in my fingers. It means that I know something very well. Εάν χρειάζεσαι βοήθεια στα αγγλικά, πάρε τηλέφωνο τον Δημήτρη. Αυτός τα παίζει στα δάχτυλα. If you need help in English, call Dimitris. He knows the language very well.

Κρύβομαι πίσω απ΄ το δάχτυλό μου./I am hiding/I hide myself behind my finger. We use it when we hide something that it is obvious, something that everyone knows. .

Όλος ο κόσμος ξέρει ότι είσαι ερωτευμένος με την Κατερίνα. Μην κρύβεσαι πίσω από το δάχτυλό σου. / All the world/everyone knows that you are in love with Katerina. Don’t hide it.  

Το πόδι/the foot and in Plural τα πόδια.

Βάζω τα δύο πόδια σε ένα παπούτσι. / To put the two foot in one shoe/ to dominate. Του φέρεται πολύ άσχημα. Του έχει βάλει τα δύο πόδια σε ένα παπούτσι./ She treats him really badly.  She dominates him.

Το βάζω στα πόδια./ I put in legs. It means “I run away”. Μόλις είδε τον σκύλο, το έβαλε στα πόδια./ when he saw the dog, he run away.

Πέφτω στα πόδια κάποιου. /I fell on someone’s legs.

It means “I beg someone”. Πέφτω στα πόδια σου. Μην πεις στους γονείς μου ότι με είδες να καπνίζω./I beg you. Don’t tell to my parents that you saw me smoking.

Παίρνω πόδι./I am taking a leg. It means “I am forced to leave my work or a place”

Αν δεν κάνεις αυτό που σου είπα, θα πάρεις πόδι./ if you won’t do what I have told you, I will send you away/ I will fire you.

Μου κόπηκαν τα πόδια. / my legs were cut. It means “my heart sank into my boots. Someone becomes suddenly disappointed, disheartened or despondent due to an undesirable outcome or turn of events.

Όταν έμαθα για το ατύχημα, μου κόπηκαν τα πόδια./ When I learned about the accident my heart sank into my boots.

Είμαι με το ένα πόδι στον τάφο./I am with one foot in the grave/I am at death’s door. Παρότι είναι με το ένα πόδι στον τάφο, ακόμη οδηγεί. / Even though he is at death’s door, he is sick or very old, he still drives.

 Το χέρι in singular and in Plural τα χέρια.

Δίνω σε κάποιον ένα χέρι ξύλο./I give to someone a hand wood. It means “I beat someone”. Αν δε σταματήσεις, θα σου δώσω ένα χέρι ξύλο που θα το θυμάσαι σε όλη σου τη ζωή./if you won’t stop I will hit you so much that you will remember it in all your life/forever.

 Σηκώνω τα χέρια / I raise my hands or σηκώνω τα χέρια ψηλά./I raise the hands high. It means “I give up”. Σηκώνω τα χέρια ψηλά μαζί σου./I give up on you. Another phrase we usually use is “Η επιστήμη σηκώνει τα χέρια ψηλά”./ The science raises hands high. It means “even science has no explanation”.

Πιάνουν τα χέρια του./his hands hold. It means “to be good with one’s hands”. A phrase we use when someone knows how to fix things. Θα το φτιάξει ο άντρας μου. Πιάνουν τα χέρια του./ My husband will make it/will repair it. He knows how to fix things.

Με το χέρι στην καρδιά. / With the hand on the heart. It means “honestly”. Με το χέρι στην καρδιά, τον εμπιστεύεσαι;/hand on heart, do you trust him?

We mean “ tell me honestly, do you trust him?”

Mε τον σταυρό στο χέρι./ With the cross in the hand. To do something with honest way. Με τον σταυρό στο χέρι κανείς δεν έκανε γρήγορα λεφτά. / With honest way no one made money fast.

Ζητώ το χέρι μιας γυναίκας./I ask for a woman’s hand, I ask from a woman to get married with me. Some years ago men were going to their girlfriend’s house to ask from her father her hand, so to ask permission to get married with her.

Βάζω το χέρι μου στο ευαγγέλιο./I put my hand on the Gospel or βάζω το χέρι μου στη φωτιά/I put my hand on the fire. Two phrases that we use when we want to show that we are absolutely sure about someone or something.

Δεν έκανε ο Γιώργος τον φόνο. Βάζω το χέρι μου στη φωτιά./George did not commit the murder. I put my hand on the fire. I put my hand on the fire/I am absolutely sure.
